In Scotland, 30 November is the feast day of Saint Andrew and an official Bank Holiday. In an uncharacteristic act of generosity, the Scottish share their patron saint with several other countries, including Greece (where they can do with all the help they can get), Russia, Romania and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. But, hey, everyone knows that!

What’s less well known is that St Andrew was a 1st-century Mo Bro. Check out the artwork of Jusepe de Ribera or the stained glass of Edinburgh’s St Giles’ Cathedral and you’ll see that St Andrew was an inspirational leader and fisher of bearded men.

So it’s really appropriate that St Andrew’s Day also marks the end of Movember, the month when Mo Bros around the world sprout facial hair to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

But unlike the Scottish, most Mo Bros will not have a day off work to recover from their exhausting and facially hair-raising fund-raising efforts.

One such selfless and generous group are the hard-working stylists of Cienté, Berkhamsted’s award-winning salon. Led by Simon Sparks, the Cienté male stylists ceremoniously had their designer stubble shaved off at the beginning of the month in preparation for their moustache-rearing efforts.

And, in the words of recently-knighted entertainer and Mo Bro Bruce Forsyth, “Didn’t they do well?” Particular praise is due to Cienté stylist Paul, who managed to grow a real Motorhead Lemmy of a Mo. True to form, Liam grew a lady-killing Clark Gable. And a special mention is also due to Joseph, who tried as hard as he could but at the end of the month still looked like Justin Bieber with the sun above his head!

While none of the Cienté boys really managed to match the beard-growing talent of Saint Andrew, the team did raise a trim £900 for the Movember cause.

If you’d like a last chance to see the Cienté Mo Bros, contribute to the fund or just snigger at Joseph, do drop into the salon at 169 High Street Berkhamsted before the razors come out.
